Charleston freight market shows signs of loosening

SONAR Key Market Insights: Charleston, SC

Highlights

The current outbound tender rejection rate in Charleston, SC is 8.1%, compared to the national tender rejection rate of 5.4%.

The Charleston outbound tender rejection rate is down 293 basis points in the past week and is down dramatically from a recent high of 13.5% in mid-July.

Like many other port cities, the tender rejection rate has been volatile in recent weeks due to the timing of tariff delays and trade agreements. The EU trade agreement over the weekend adds a degree of certainty, which may reduce volatility going forward.

The past few months, the West Coast ports have taken share of total imports from the East Coast ports, but both Class I railroad Union Pacific and the Intermodal Association of North America expect the East Coast ports to regain market share.

Quotable

“Imagine seamlessly hauling steel from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Colton, Calif., and moving tomato paste from Heron, Calif., to Fremont, Ohio. Lumber from the Pacific Northwest, plastics from the Gulf Coast, copper from Arizona and Utah, and soda ash from Wyoming. Right now, tens of thousands of railroaders are moving almost everything we use. You name it, and at some point, the railroad hauled it.”

— Jim Vena, chief executive for Union Pacific
