H-Town rejection rates sink

SONAR Key Market Insights: Houston

Highlights

The Houston outbound tender rejection rate is currently 3.8% after declining from 5.5% in late July. As a result, its outbound tender rejection rate went from being roughly in line with the national average to 160 basis points below it. The Houston inbound tender rejection rate is also low at just 2.1%. Therefore, shippers should have an easy time sourcing capacity for inbound and outbound Houston loads.

When combining the change in rejection rates with the large size of Houston’s freight market (5th largest outbound market and 3rd largest inbound market), the Weighted Rejection Index reading of -1.89 indicates that it is having a “strong loosening” impact on the overall freight market.

The Houston freight market is currently well-balanced between inbound and outbound freight, with a current Headhaul Index of only -6 (plus or minus 0 is considered balanced). Often, the Houston market is more of a backhaul market.
